Team Brazil Wins Street Child World Cup!

We’re happy to announce that the Brazil’s girls’ team won the Street Child World Cup!

We are proud co-founders of Street Child World Cup, a global movement for street children to receive the protection, rehabilitation and opportunities that they are entitled to. In April 2014, over 230 former street children from 18 countries travelled to Rio de Janerio to take part in football tournaments, arts festivals and participatory conferences on children's rights.

From the outset Team Brazil were favourites for this tournament although they had some very tough matches ahead of them! They won 14-0 against Team Indonesia, 4-0 against Team Zimbabwe, 5-0 against Team El Salvador and narrowly beat Team Nicaragua with 3-1.

There was an intense energy surrounding their final game against the Philippines, which took place on a pitch under Christ the Redeemer in the beautiful sunshine. In 2010, Philippines beat Brazil but Team Brazil were victorious this year, winning by 1-0 in a nail-biting match!

Player Claudianny said she thought the win would put children at the forefront of the Brazilian public’s mind ahead of the FIFA World Cup: ‘I think because Brazil has won this event people will give children more attention and respect.’

IBISS trains talented youth from the community to use their skills, working with children and adolescents at risk of involvement in drugs and violence. Their coach Philip Veldhuis thinks the win will encourage his team: ‘We’ve been working to this as a big goal to accomplish, and to achieve what they set out to will be so good for their self-esteem and confidence.’
